The new addition is the educational part of the Darussalam Foundation and is an extension of the existing religious structure of Masjid Darussalam (the Mosque). In keeping with the owner's desire to blend in the architecture of the new to the existing building, similar Cast Stone were used manufactured by the same company that supplied the material to the original Masjid building. Some of the color and elements were carried from the original structure. However, the nature of the program of an academy with a Gymnasium and other community services in the new building provides that character and expression design that takes its own identity.
The Academy is programmed for K-12 full time learning. It provides a day-care facility. Classrooms with current technology, Library with research support and computer center. It provides separate Fitness Centers for boys and girls, an NCAA sized Basketball court / Gymnasium. The facility provides an entire floor for Women's Prayer spaces to supplement the main Mosque. It provides an equipped Kitchen and dining hall for holding Banquets. The parts of the new facility are designated storm shelter. The construction for the project is nearing completion.

Construction: Pre-cast concrete panel wall and floor system. Steel Dome.
Client: Muslim Community Association of Western Suburbs
Project Completion: October 2023 (Projected)
A mosque of this size usually ends up with the focus and attention going into the main prayer hall. In this case it was more so than others. Also because the large size of the main prayer hall is entirely under the large dome. It is claimed to be the second largest dome in the Chicago area. Due to zoning changes on the property it was decided to take advantage of the new building height increase, resulting in adding a "neck" to lift the dome, and required a creative handling of the structural systems. The large dome was raised to a height of 45 ft above the first floor. The pre-cast concrete construction was designed earlier by Dome Structural Engineers. The initial construction was put on hold for a number of years. NAI was commissioned recently to re-evaluate and address the design and technical challenges of the dome over the main prayer hall. The design re-worked achieved a much satisfactory result as an architectural and structural solution. The current structure is part of a phased development, with the future phase the entire complex hall achieve a more balanced proportion aesthetically and functionally.
